 for some reason, the hammer is missing on a few, perhaps the owner thought it may have been in his way ???

Hello, turnnut. I agree with you, the hammer head may have been removed for a specific job. Former owner probably put it away for safekeeping & never saw it again , as things so often happen in my shop!!!!!!!  Regards, Lou
