This old Pebble 5449 shows Plvmb on the handle but Proto 5449 on the head.
Do you suppose it is a replacement head or what?

What got me to looking was the 1954 Proto catalog. It showed pebble style ratchets and breaker bars. I found one on the bay, but someone bought it a month ago--dang it.

Anyone have any of these?
No 5449 Proto pebble, but I do have 5849 1" Female Proto pebble. It looks really nice!
I have some Plvmb--and Proto--line wrenches in the pebble format. I consider them way cool.
Early Proto had Los Angeles; later ones, USA only.

Replacement face plate. At least he's not trying to pass it off as dual marked / transition.............
I have a 5649, 3/4 inch drive Proto MFD Los Angeles USA with pebble finish on the handle and a 5849, 1 inch drive Proto MFD USA with pebble finish on the handle. The 5649 has Proto on the cover plate, the 5849 has a plain cover plate no markings.

Take the face plate off and check the reverse.
Both sides of the cover plate are plain, no markings of any kind. Inside is as clean as new.
I own a Proto 3/8 ratchet with a side plate that is stamped on both sides. The sides are both stamped Proto with different styles of lettering. i also have a Proto side plate that the mounting holes are not tapped, only drilled. It came from a factory repair kit and has a black finish.

I know one thing about Proto pear head ratchets, they are one of the most copied designs out there. China, Japan and Taiwan have copied them. Armstrong and OTC have copies or they were made for them by Proto. Urrea in Mexico makes one. Urrea was once Protomex. Some parts will interchange, but most don't.
I wish Proto would bring the dual drive model they made for Vogel.
