What is the story on these wrenches. I know I have heard about old Alphonso making tools, but can't remember what.

The story, and that's exactly what it is, a story, is that Pendleton bought them out and Alphonse when off making wrenches on his own and for California Tool Co. However, I can't find any proof of that. In fact, I found where some gent returns to AZ after traveling to CA and the local paper reports he is the new owner of the Plomb Tool Works in LA. Can't verify that story either.
Suffice it to say that Alphonse probably made them, sometime between 1909 and 1925 separate from the Plomb Company. The where and why and for whom is a mystery..................so far.
I own a 1/2 inch x 9/16 box combo wrench that is marked A.Plomb. No part number. I have owned Calif. Tools in the past, but they are long gone.

I think I had a 7/16 open end/flare end combo wrench once. Said A PLOMB on it.
A bit unusual.
