the odd shaped end is in good shape compared to the round shaft. so that is why I thought a stop?  but what would it be on? This was from a farm / junk  auction so some type of implement?

No the squarish tip is not copper.
I might know a soldering iron if I saw one or 10-12 or so, I've made a few handles or re-purposed a couple.
