I've had bit brace sockets but none with this diamond shaped projection on the side . It(the projection) is 1/8 in thick and 3/8 deep and 5/16 wide where it meets the body. Socket is 5/8 hexagon. I first thought this projection was casting flash but it is a definite cast projection. Ever seen this before or know usage of this projection ?

AS we wait for the experts, will venture it was a type of depth stop?

Hand held reamer/countersink?????

I have had a lot of those over the years, and I have never had one like that.

I can't help but think that is a user modification. Are you positive that piece is not gas welded onto it?
-
??? was it put on to remove dirt around the nut on an implement ???
I'm sure some of you had scraped dirt/rust with a screw driver to get a wrench or socket to fit a nut.
just my 2 cent thought, Frank

Tang follows parting line and appears to have cast surface. No evidence of welding

Interesting
Thanks for the better shot. In the other photos it almost looks like its gas welded.
-
Looking at these shots closer it appears that a fair chunk of that appendage is missing in action.

The two I have seem to be unfinished castings as well

I've had two that look like that one.... of course, goodness knows where they are right now. But, if I have two, I'm guessing that it may not be a user modification??
