I was teasing on the name; I suspect it was made for a dollar bin at the hardware store, and I've found other dollar-bin tools whose makers lacked the pride to label them.  It would be interesting to clean that up and see how it cuts.

No name on the blade, I intend to strip the rust/grime off the sides to see if a name is hiding under it. I will keep you posted. (I think the handles look like Stanley).

Hello, Somewhere along the line, the "Made In England" raised lettering became part of the casting. I was under the impression that cheaper tool companies skipped this step. Are there any markings on the back of the cap? Foundry marks? Lettering? Regards, Lou

Not a thing, Nada, Zero, Sweet F.A. (as my father would have said)

It is interesting that, with all the cheapness indicated by the construction, wood selection for tote and knob, etc., they did make a tote fully oval in cross section, and a nice large knurled knob on the lever cap.  If I stumbled over one of those at the right price, it would definitely follow me home just for kicks.

Seems to me I have one that's either the same or very similar. I'm not fully unpacked from a recent move but I will go and look to see what I can find.

I have cleaned of the sides of the body and nothing found, however looking at the blade closely it does say made britain on it but also nothing else.

I did some looking but I can't find the plane I was after. I did come across a Stanley #40 and a #401/2 which are some what similar and also 2 Brilliant Planes which again are some what similar. Not sure where the 2 Brilliant planes were made I've never got around to looking for more info on them. If I can find my camera I'll try to gets some pictures posted.

It certainly looks like the Stanley 040 and I guess someone could have swapped the blade as mine says made in Great Britain not Made In England like the body ?

The mouth, while it's open, is not open enough for a Stanley No. 40 or equivalent.  The mouth on those is wide enough for a Siamese cat to slip through, although a fatter cat might have trouble.  The shavings from a scrub plane often resemble gouge chips more than plane shavings.

Hello,, Bill I agree!!! The Stanley No. 40 uses an "extra thick convex shaped cutter" 1-1/4" wide. From John Walter's book on Stanley Tools. Regards, Lou
