Title: For $1
Post by: Mike H on April 23, 2017, 07:19:41 AM
Yesterday (4-22-17) I hit a couple yard sales
and picked up the two tools shown for $1
The head on the hammer is a little loose but
it's not going to be a go-to user so what the hey
I am guessing that piece on top is a roofer's "tuck-point"
trowel for bull. Overall Length=11"
Can anyone corroborate?
Thanks

Is the trowel flat on the bottom or beveled around the edge?  It kind of looks like a bee capping knife.  What is the scale?  It looks like a sand moulding trowel, but I think it may be too big for that.

is there a small stamped name in the trowel on the metal shank near the wooden handle?
I do a little sand casting and the trowels are mostly 4-8" long and fairly narrow 1-2" wide.
Added a page from old catalog.

OK First off; can find no maker's marks on the piece
Also, the "Blade" is square edge/not beveled
It has an arc along it's length but given the condition
overall I think that may be misuse
Attached a crude dwg for dimens.

With those dimensions, I would vote for sand casting trowel.

you can tell one from the wear also but it would be hard to tell from a pic. They sold them to anyone with money!  I would not be surprised if it wasn't used for cake decorating many years ago. I have a few but not a good pic of any of them. The catalog is a 1880's-90's one with fancy handles! Sand trowels would be used on larger castings to smooth sand in the mold. The slicking spoons are for smaller and detail areas, those are more common.
added another page of that catalog
