Hello,
I seem to have a fascination with tools that I can't identify. Could be more of an addiction lol
This is what I know: Nothing
This is what I think:
Puller or gripper for an older car or truck
Adjustable. Once gripped, locks in place.
Measures 10"
No mfg found
Number incised in a border: 61-2556
Any idea what it is and/or who made it? How old?
Thanks.

Valve spring compressor?

No question mark needed, Mark. That was quick.
So, it is antique. I haven't found or matched the exact number, but found a listing for Model T/A by Endestro.
I think they mean Indestro which began in the late 20's which would make it a tool for a Model A?
Now, to see if I can find the model number.
Thanks so much. Appreciate any additional info.

Valve spring compressor, yes - although I've seen them called "lifters," too - for a flathead/side valve engine.

Thanks, Bill, more great information.
So, have we agreed it is for a Model A?
-
Forgot to mention that I can't confirm or deny that this is made by Indestro

That valve spring compressor could be used for many different flathead / side valve engines. It will not work on Ford Flathead V8's tho. I have used that type of tool many times working on older model forklifts using Chrysler 251 and 264 CI six cylinder engines.

a valve lifter opens when the handles are squeezed.
a valve compressor will close when the handles are squeezed.
I believe ?

A useful way to think about it.
A lot of the valve (spring) compressors for overhead valve motors look like huge lightweight C-clamps with a ratchet or screw to compress the spring. The head's off the motor when you're doing this, so you can fit the big C-clamp around the head.
With a flathead motor, you often do valve work without removing the intake/exhaust manifold, carb, etc.; and working space is often pretty tight. With the valve (spring) lifter, you can just push down on the valve head as you lift the spring.

Thank you, all, for your generous help.
Can anyone identify the manufacturer?
