Also to provide the  sickle section something to shear against.  One has to have the other.

The ledger plate is another part of this contraption.. its riveted to the guard and the section shears across it.  i believe its seen in the right photo?

In the hands of a teenage boy, it's the best Hallowe'en costume accessory ever.  Looks very ninja-ish, if you don't know what it is, and probably even if you do.

The logo on it is that of International Harvester Corporation (IHC) I believe.
