I came across this today. It's clearly a ratchet assembly, but why this arrangement? The drive size is 3/8" and the cog wheel has a relief for a retaining clip to keep the whole thing together. The diameter is only about 1.5" so you wouldn't deliver much torque turning it by hand. I'm thinking that it went in some larger assembly that acted on the cog wheel (like an open frame ratchet handle). The extended shank is strange, sort of eliminates the need for an extension. Any ideas gentlemen?
4/6/18 update. Tried Google image search. The assembly produced a bunch of auto parts, not even close. I tried just the cog, but only got a bunch of gears. Its not a gear. The teeth do not have a gear's profile to accommodate the sliding action of gear teeth. They are square cut, more like a ratcheting type of mechanism.
I've added another image. Another strange aspect of this assembly is the larger thickness of the section between where the pawls are and the top direction selector button. With a traditional ratchet this is small so the head size doesn't get too thick. So I suppose this additional thickness is there for a reason.
For now, the search goes on......

Not really familiar with it, but i would wag it may have been part of a multiplier.

could it be from a powered tool ??

Impact wrench would be my guess.
