Title: Need help to identify old outside calipers
Post by: lebaron on October 02, 2018, 11:30:24 AM
One is 14" the other 6". There are no markings on either of them. Any help for who made them is appreciated. I don't understand something made that nice has no makers mark.

No idea who made them, but they do look to be well buit. Is that a washer under the wing nut or is that shoulder part of the nut.

They both have washers under the wing nut.

I flipped through 851 pages of Cope's machinist tool books, and the closest things I could find are a set of calipers made by Monroe Brothers, Fitchburg, MA, circa 1870, and a caliper patented by W. H. MIner, Oct. 14, 1873, #143584.  I think they may be a real nice user made calipers.

Thanks WV for you time reserching this. The Miner ones look the most similer. From where I got these the era lines up. These appear high quality and very well made. Again thanks for your time and knowledge.

A lot of machinist tools are stamped very lightly.  Did you look it over read good with a magnifying glass for a patent date?

Went over them inch by inch with magnifying glass. No signs of anything.
