Hello, I found this today, no visible markings. Head & handle are one piece solid steel. Any ideas on maker? Thanks,Lou

RH12T ;-)

I've been looking thru old trade publications most of the day and saw a "old ratchet" like that. I was going to take a screen shot and didn't. Damned if I can find it again

Hello, Oldgoaly. Sounds like my method of research!! Northwoods, if I flip it over does it become an LH12T :cheesy:

Haven't found the ad, but shows this in a service story from 1919

Hello, Oldgoaly. Thanks!! I found this one on DATAMP, close, but the one I have here has no external knob. Regards, Lou

Wow that is a whole lot older than what I was looking at!
Some of the old blacksmith/wheelwright trade journals go back to the 1880's-1890's. The kind of stuff you do when it's too hot or too cold outside. Or in my case when you are having back spasms.

I've got a feeling it might be this one http://www.datamp.org/patents/advance.php?pn=1165995&id=20131&set=21 (http://www.datamp.org/patents/advance.php?pn=1165995&id=20131&set=21)

Hello, Bill. Thanks for the info. There are similarities, as in the slot for the pawl, and the gear. The one that I posted appears to be made from a solid piece of steel, and also has a cover plate for the gear. There is no evidence of anything being pressed together, it looks like everything wass milled into the steel. Thanks, Lou

I would guess they figured out it was easier or cheaper to mill out for the spring and pawl than it was to mill a precise rectangular hole to press fit that handle-spring and pawl combination.
