Title: The stars were alligned
Post by: coolford on October 18, 2020, 04:30:50 PM
Went to an auction yesterday, much bigger than advertised, two rings going on at the same time.  Tools and more tools, but most fairly modern except one item.  The Larson socket set shown.  This is a rare set and I had never before seen a full set in the proper box.  Each socket is marked by a capital L in a hexagon as is the ratchet and the universal.  They offered the entire table as choice and the bidding started at $5.00 and I had choice at $25.00.  And this is the set, complete and only one socket incorrect.

The last time I checked Alloy Artifacts they didn't mention Larson, but now they have a very short mention.  The full name is Larson Tool and stamping Co., founded in 1920 in Attleboro, Mass.  They made the socket set I showed that had the patented ratchet as well as stampings for automobiles.  Apparently the socket set might be the only tools they made.  The company is still in business today as Precision Metal Stamping and Assembly, primarily making pressure vessels as well as other precision stampings.

In the picture is the trademark on the ratchet and each socket.

Cool find!
Well must be that time of the year? I saw a "FREE" lulzbot mini 3d on Craigslist. Thought it was a scam. On Friday I had my son contact them and get it, not scam!  With a hour or two of troubleshooting it's up and running. Total cost 1 small red wire tie 5 cents?
Hopefully others on here are getting lucky too!

It all comes down to the fact you will not find anything unless you keep looking.

Or as my old fisherman friend George used to say, "If you wanna catch fish, you gotta keep your bait in the water."

LARSON TOOL & STAMPING -- A page & a third on this company on pgs. 14 - 15 of the March 2013 MVWC Newsletter.  The page is a reprint of a Nov. 4. 1920 MOTOR AGE page.   The patent # for the ratchet is 1,419,391.  The implication is this set has held together for roughly a century.  (I'm thinking of 100 years today because a former co-worker is celebrating her 100th birthday today.)

Any socket set that only loses one socket in 100 years is a rarity.  It has another Larson socket, but it is incorrect.
