Sitting in a box of rusty tools across the barnyard this looked like an old car jack, but using the same mechanism as early jacks this seems to be a puller and not a lifter. It has a patent date of 3-5-29, and what looks like a pat number of 1704029 but this doesn't match anything so I'm reading the number wrong. Folded out it's 20 inches long, the grippers are about 2-1/2 across. No other marks except Made in USA and a circle "B" forge mark. Any ideas?

Is that an old three point wheel rim ratchet used to put tires on steel rims?
BTW, I looked at your patent numbers and came up with another (and obviously incorrect) reading: 1784829.
It gave me a strange contraption: a 3 cylinder engine designed just in time for the financial collapse of the Great Depression.

Well, it is an old car jack, usually known as a split rim auto jack or just as an auto rim jack. It was used to mount split rims to keep them from bashing you in the face when you applied air. It kept the split rim from coming loose from the main part of the rim. Many people were inured by this type of rim.

Yes for split rims, Chevys in the 1920's used them and others .

Thanks guys, now I know which ever growing pile of old rusty tools it goes into, the automotive pile. It's another one of those tools once you see the patent picture you think, "Well duh', I should have figured that out". :grin:

That engine looks fantastic, a supercharged inline 3 cylinder... or a 2 cylinder with a slave cylinder? I'm not sure how well it would work but I appreciate the creative idea!
