Won a 19-A Plomb catalog(1947?) on ebay and it arrived today. In pristine condition and worth every nickel. All I can say is that if I'm going to collected one of everything in this 115 page catalog, I'll need a bigger shop......
BTW, who has ever actually used a 31/32" socket on something????

I've never even seen a 31/32" socket, but they must have been fairly common as they appear in my 1948, 1950 and even 1961 Gray-Bonney catalogs...
Some of the old sockets in odd sizes were made so as to fit odd fasteners. That probably fit a 15/16 nut nicely in the old days.

31/32 was the size for 9/16 diameter bolts under the now obsolete USS system.
Tool manufacturers allowed for mechanics to work on older equipment having the USS system.
(I don't fully trust my memory any more so I verified this in a Machinery's Handbook 16th edition.)

Actualy, it's for the nut that goes on a 9/16 bolt. The nuts were spec'd 9/16 , but with toerance +/-, so to make sure the wrenches would fit, they were spec'd 1/32 smaller.
It's a wonder that mechanics didn't routinely run out the door screaming insanely...
The real problem with the whole thing is, if you spec things on 32's , and you work from say, 1/4 to 3"", you need something like 90 different sizes....
31/32??? Don't know if I've seen that on any tools so far in my collecting.
However, I do have this one socket I keep on the PC desk........a 45/64 Hinsdale 1/2" drive socket....I'm still looking for others in 64ths measurement to keep it company!!! Note the odd practice of stamping some sort of code beside where the 1/2" drive hole is broached!
This 19-A catalog has the 31/32 socket listed on page 47(as part of a set), and my most recent ebay haul of non-descript Plomb stuff had......drum roll......a #5431 31/32" 1/2 drive socket in it. ]
oh, and the price list is in this thing too. Jan 1, 1944 War Time list. Yes, I did some photos.....
It was advertised as a 1947 and it doesn't appear to have the pebble finish wrenches in it, so I'm a bit bummed by that, and likely wouldn't have bid as high as I did if I'd known it wasn't going to have them in there. May contact the seller and see what's up. For now, I guess I'll keep it and keep looking for the later edition.
