Amen to that!  I once gave a talk on Mountain Men, and came in full regalia.  One guy made joking comments about weapons and being afraid.  Since I didn't bring any firearms, I was puzzled.  About a half hour later, I realized he was looking at the Green River knife on my belt.  It had never occurred to me to see it as anything other than a tool.
