Title: LG's BIG kijiji score 1/27/12!
Post by: lbgradwell on January 29, 2012, 10:22:46 PM
On Friday, I saw a kijiji ad that was mere minutes old:

The location was only 10 minutes from me and although no brand was mentioned, enlarging a photo allowed me to catch a glimpse of a corner of a label and I knew what it was. I emailed the seller & told him I'd take it...

I had to work unexpectedly on Saturday, so I could not meet in the morning as the seller had proposed, but I swung by on the way home in the evening and scooped the set.

It is a 1"-drive Gray XH16 Socket Set. I have absolutely no use for this, but I had to have it even though dollars are scarce! I figure I can always sell it for more than the $100 I paid...

Here it is with it's 1/4"-drive cousin sitting on top:

It runs from 1-7/16" to 2-1/2":

As mine is a Gray, it is from after 1961, but this Gray-Bonney catalogue shot from 1961 depicts the set:

The set is still available today, but the 17" extension is no longer included in the set:

http://www.graytools.com/toolcatalogue/?page=product&name=15%20Pieces%2012%20Point%20Standard%20SAE%20Socket%20Set&itemNo=1120&s_filter=&recPage=9&startRow=1&pageNum=1 (http://www.graytools.com/toolcatalogue/?page=product&name=15%20Pieces%2012%20Point%20Standard%20SAE%20Socket%20Set&itemNo=1120&s_filter=&recPage=9&startRow=1&pageNum=1)

The 2" socket was missing and had been replaced with a Snap-on LDH643. For some reason, this size doesn't appear on Snap-on USA, Canada, UK, or Australia, but it's listed on the Mexico site!

http://www.snapon.com.mx/producto.php?q=4000_LDH643 (http://www.snapon.com.mx/producto.php?q=4000_LDH643)

Whoever owned this set needed a deep 2" socket because a second socket has been quite expertly welded onto the LDH643 to make it longer! (Is there any way for me to remove this welded portion?)

The wear is minimal on most sockets, but in addition to the 2" size, the 1-1/2" size has also seen quite a bit of use and in an application that must have been recessed since the outside of the socket has been so worn that the name, size and model number is work away entirely. The wall of this socket is visibly thinner than the others!

Here is the 2-1/2" socket with the 3/16" socket from the 1/4"-drive set:

And here it is with the 1/4"-drive ratchet:

LG is amused.  :)

Thats not a score thats a steal. Around here at auction 3/4 drive Grays bring over $100. The only 1 inch I remember seeing sell brought $135. for just the rachet.

Yeah, I haven't been able to find an online price for the current set, but I don't suppose it can be under $1000.

The seller said he had 4 others waiting to buy the set (which kind of surprised me)...

Wow, what a set. Just owning it, even if only a conversation piece now, I'm sure you will use it somewhere, even if smaller tools would work.
I have a complete 3/4" set, and just love having it available if the "need" ever arises.

True, but the Wright 821 set has more pieces and there are 4 sockets larger than 2-1/2". And it may list for $2700, but it sells for ~$1400.

I'll know tomorrow as I asked a local dealer...

LOL! Just noticed my "signature" has been changed by some omnipotent power...

I heard back from the local Gray dealer today. The news is good (and a little surprising):

XH16 socket set$1,439.00
X9 (the matching 17" extension)   $94.55
4211 (3/4"-drive to 1"-drive)$30.30
13% taxes$203.30
TOTAL$1767.15

The current set does not contain the longer 17" extension that used to be included in the set. And the seller must have had some 3/4"-drive tools too as he also had a 3/4"F to 1"M adapter in the box. (It's currently useless to me as I have no 3/4" tools. Of course, that may change... ;))

So the $100 paid comes out to 5.66% of the cost of a new set.

Nice.
