Title: Thorsen 4-Sided Display Rack
Post by: OilyRascal on February 09, 2012, 07:06:05 PM
I was on a fishing trip over the weekend with a friend.  We had a need to stop at the local mechanics shop for some work.  Inside the shop I found this 4-sided rotating Thorsen display board.  He saw me drooling and asked me if I'd get it out of his way, and I kindly obliged.  Cost=3 hour drive in gas to it get home

It has either been rebuilt, at some point, or the rotating mechanisms were built with 4 flat display boards on each side.  I tend to think all four boards are mismatches, but I've not dug in and done the research.  I just wanted to share some of my drool :)

2/23/2012 EDIT - Link to thread for discussion on collection of tools associated with the display board:

Very much like my Crescent display rack.

Except that yours is in MUCH BETTER SHAPE.  It appears your has hinges on the vertical (sides), as if it would open to expose the inside of the carousel.  Is that the case?

One panel is hinged to open.
I have been trying to fill it with the pictured tools.
That Thorsen will be much more challenging to fill, I bet.

Yes PawPaw, I'm guessing you're right.  Actually, my greater desire is simply to see the display restored, drool some more over it's beauty, and then find it a home with somebody a little more capable of finding the tools than I am.  I'm certain there are those who are committed to collecting Thorsen, but I am not currently one of them.

Dimwittedmoose found mine and bought it and shipped it to me, then I rebuilt it. This was all documented on Tool Talk before the crash of the forum last year.
Here is a Photobucket album of photos of the display.

You're gonna like him even more now.  I have a full set of Thorsen combo wrenches from the 2012 through the 2024(3/4") and the plastic pouch they came in and they are in excellent shape.  Was sending them to ebay, but if you have stuff to trade(or cash), sounds like I can start filling your display.  It's very cool BTW!!!

And I have a Thorsen #1114 14mm x 15mm DOE and a Thorsen #3008 1/4 x 5/16 DOE right here on my desk as well as possibly a couple more out in the shop.

Do you have any USA made ratchets to trade?  I might have some trade fodder!.....Cranky

Off the top of my head that I'd part with Craftsman's in about every post 1950 flavor, a nice older USA Blackhawk 1/2", a 3/8 snappy with black handle, 1/2 snappy chrome with some very light owner marks, and a Proto pro 3/8 looks great.  If that list doesn't tempt you I'll go on a dig with some details on what you're looking for.  I MIGHT part with a nice worker ..... but please not my Williams S52 Superratchet :(

Oilyrag I just won a Thorsen board like the last one you have shown (1/2 drive board) Mine doesn't include the pegs (20 d nails) I was wondering if you could tell me their length so I can make some up Thanks.

Absolutely!  L=4-5/8", 7/32" thick galvanized stock, with 3/16" length of threads (about 4 threads) on one end with other end rounded over.  It had 1/2" of peg threaded into the display board.

IMHO - It could use 1/2" (versus 3/16") of threads and 1/2" threaded into board.

I can't tell if there are metrics on those boards, but I have a handful of Thorsen metric sockets and a metric combo (14mm?) if you need them.

At this point if they are Thorsen and not duplicate of what I have (I have little to no metric) I will gladly take them off your hands should you want to part with them.  You can send me a PM with a "want list" and I'll try to help, you can PM a fair price to ship to 71730 and I can cash up, or you can set them to the side for me until we can work out details (and we WILL).   Your choice.  Thanks for reaching out.

Oily, check your PM for my finds from last weekend in the Farmington MO area.  Nothing earth shaking, but I've never seen a pair of the SJ-8 pliers.

Frank - I very much appreciate you thinking of me and posting these.  I need to pass as I've already marked each of those you noted above off my list.  Again - I appreciate you thinking of me.
