Remember when they sold you block ice and gave you a pick to make it into pieces. If memory serves me right the card you put in the front window had 25;50;75 &100 to tell the ice man how big a block you wanted. They also sold coal in the winter. Four digit phone numbers were all that were needed back then. Those were the old times ( good is optional)

Cool! I have a small collection of ice picks.
I well remember the ice house here in Alvin, Texas. Fun to watch the ice blocks being scored so the iceman could chop them into smaller blocks, and then into chips.
That same ice house, like many others also sold soft drinks and beer, and we still call some small beer joints "Ice Houses".

I have a few of the wood handled giveaway picks, but I never saw a giveaway that was that nice. Our second house, when I was growing up, had a full built in icebox with an ice door on the back porch. The icebox was much bigger than our current refrig.

I remember my uncle used to live in a small city and when we used to visit was usually on a saturday. The ice wagon pulled by horses would come by and we kids would follow the wagon to pick up the pieces of ice to suck on. The name on the wagon was Stack . During the week he came around with a junk wagon . He would pick up for free and let you rummage through the junk and sell you any thing you could use.

I'd almost forgotten ice houses. I remember going to one with my grandfather in the early '50s. For some reason, it was the ice tongs that held my attention. I have a few ice picks myself. How many of us still call refrigerators ice boxes?

I do , but the wife, kids, and grandkids don't.

I must live in the poor part of the country. Not only do I remember them well (and I'm only 40), but I could take a 20 minute drive to an icehouse that has been open for all my life......although I'm not certain I'd still see a full traditional operation.

I also tend to pick up ice picks, and have a similar metal one. It's a home and I cant remember the company name.
I did grow up with a refrigerator, but remember picnics with beer kegs and my father scoring the ice to break it.
While living in Texas, also learned what the principal item is in a Texas ice house ! The shift workers in the refineries would be getting off of work at 8 AM, it was time for a Beer !!
