Title: Early Birding a Flea Market
Post by: dimwittedmoose51 on June 14, 2012, 08:20:56 PM
Since I'll likely be working Saturday, I cruised over to the Father's Day weekend Flea Market to see what was there in the way of tools.  Was pleasantly surprised by the selection and the prices were okay too.  First stop was a guy that was there in April and his inventory was smaller, but he had some winners.  Made a couple of other stops and the gal that runs the flea market always seems to have a nugget or two worth snagging.  The German Eldi bike pedal wrench is cool, as is the Indestro Select Rat with the exposed rat teeth.  It's in great shape.  Whomever bent up the Plomb 1150 did a really sanitary job of it, as there's still some plating at the apex of both bends.  NO welding or grind marks either.  Still wish they'd left it alone.  The long Plomb extension is one of the USN series for the military.  The Proto locking Pliers I've never seen either, but the teeth are pretty much toast.  The Proto side cutters must be a tad newer, as what's left of the logo is real faint around the pivot point.  Never heard of Bonner Quality Tools or the Bergman adj. 6".  Oh yeah, and then there's that HDS Perfect Handle.  Need Papaw's opinion on what it started out life as.  Not sure if I'll try to resuscitate it or leave it like it is.  Took a magnifying glass to "get the good news"

From the top,Is a 10" long Challnger #95 drift,The Eldi Pedal Wrench, The Snap On F4L 3/8" speeder,a Fleet 1675 1/2" Speeder, The Perfect Handle The Indestro Select 6470, The Plomb 1150(bastardized as it appears to be), 20" long 1/2" drive Plomb  NAF 1110-6 USN extension, Proto side cutters, Williams s-15 1/2" Speeder(pretty cool), Gambles Artisan #1 Phillips,Stubby Octo Grip Snap On phillips  SDP-22,4" Diamond adj,  6" Bergman/ Queen City  adj., Proto 291 Locking Pliers, Bonner Quality Tools#31, Electrolite DBE 1/2x9/16, and a vintage C-man DBE 3/8"x7/16".

Spent $25 on everything and hesitated on $5 for the Indestro, but I had to have it.  The Eldi was $4, and the PH was $3.  Everything else was a buck or two or less.

Picked up a old National Scientifics Co. mini jigsaw and stone sander today.  Make a separate post on that little jewel in the power tool section., it even runs, but the blade is toast.

The H D Smith screwdriver is probably the "Mechanics" screwdriver, but looks like it has been shortened and reground.
The Bergman straight wrench is highly desirable, and I need one to help complete my Bergman adjustable set. Name your price. I have all the curved ones and two of the straight ones.

The clear and blue phillips screwdriver is interesting "Gambles Artisan"
Did Gambles department store use artisan as a brand also???? hmm

Which wrench is the bonner?
(C.E.Bonner doesn't show up often, and the marks vary...)

PS: There are folks who will kill for the snapon octo grips ;P

Rusty:  The Bonner is the featured wrench in Photo #6(last one).

Papaw.  The Bergman is yours, butthe movable jaw sticks out a bit from the static jaw when closed up and it wobbles a bit and needs cleaning.  I only grabbed it figuring I'd give it to a guy with the same surname at work.  Motivation for buying some of this stuff is unique....eh?  I'm sure you'll find me a suitable swap itewm and we can keep cash out of the mix.

pm if you feel the need.

Rusty, I've acquired several Gambles Artisan tools over the months and once had a Gambles Artisan tool Box, but it wasn't of real high quality and the rust had gotten to it pretty good.

Sad to report your PH driver (mechanics pattern for sure)  has been shortened past the hardening.
If you take a file to the flats you will see for yourself. It'll cut like butter.

But all is not lost, you can reharden and retemper it with an ordinary propane torch. Although two torches makes it go a whole lot faster.

Scott,  What was the length of the PH SD that you showed in your heat treating link?  I have several small ones but never knew how small they really got.  All the little guys I have seen have been marked Germany and I think one that was marked Italy.  I've never had a true PH SD in a small size.

Since I had to dig out the catalog anyway.......

The Mechanics screwdriver was available in 2 sizes,  9-1/2", and 10-1/2".
The size is also the overall length.
Blade length on the 9-1/2 was listed as 4-1/2, and on the 10-1/2 as 5"

The tip on the smaller was 1/2 by 5/64" on a 7/16 shaft
The tip on the bigger was 3/4 by 5/64" on a 9/16 shaft

A case of 6 dozen weighs 50,80 pounds......
