Title: Church Keys
Post by: HeelSpur on July 18, 2012, 04:03:00 PM
Anybody here collect church keys, or can-bottle openers, whatever you want to call them?

Found a few different ones but they're a lil rusty.

I always look at them and then think "what are you thinking???",  you already collect enough "stuff."  There are some cool ones out there.

I've got a few but don't collect them. The only one I bought was $.25 for an Electrolux one. It struck my sense of humor that Electrolux would give away openers to help ease hubby's pain from spending the big bucks on a vacumn.

This is just stuff that I have found in different buildings,
I never thought about collecting them, I just might start
since I have a couple anyhow. At least their small.

Damn shame that they are obsolete.  Much more fun to use than a pop top.

I have a few but not a real collection. Some local ones that are out of business.

In the first picture- Apex- is that a knife sharpener? I have multi tool with those rollers on it.

Noel, Yes I think you are correct and the little tiny roller is probably meant to be a glass cutter.

Somebody probably does collect them,  There is enough variation to keep you busy hunting for more.  I've run across a few, but the only one I ever bought had the long can opener that was later prohibited as a gang weapon.

They're still useful for opening things like tomato sauce cans when you're cooking.

I keep a "Grand Prize Beer" similar to the APEX shown, on my key ring.
It works perfectly on Corona bottles!
The other style beer can openers are in a tool drawer.
I collect them if I see one at a garage sale!

Gang,

I don't actively collect openers, but when they find me and are fairly priced, I grab them.  I have several from the 1960's that represent the brands I remember when I was coming of age (Burgermeister, Shlitz, Olympia, Hamms, Pabst, Falstaff, Lucky Larger, etc) and a bunch that represent Texas brands (Lone Star, Pearl, Santone, Southern Select, etc).  And I have a handfull of openers that are just interesting designs that caught my eye.

If you're interested in openers check out this cool little site:  http://www.just-for-openers.org/

I've got an old key hook thingie I found at a yard sale for like 25 cents that I display some church keys on, but the only collecting I do is finding them in the bottom of auction or garage sale tool boxes and then my wife gets first right of refusal, as she's the beer can opener expert in the house.

As previously alluded to, they don't take up a lot of space.....and yes, that Apex is the coolest one I've seen to date....
