Title: Ever feel like crying?
Post by: HeelSpur on August 10, 2012, 03:50:47 PM
Went to the Rt. 11 crawl today and it was pretty miserable til about 9 am, rain.
But it finally cleared off and most people started putting their stuff out for sale.
We stopped at one place where there didn't seem to be anything of interest to either of us.
I looked over at a hay wagon of baby clothes & toys and walked away w/o looking at the items.
That was a HUGE mistake...... I'm the type of person that generally looks at items pretty quick and move on, but my buddy for some reason has to stare for a few minutes at everything.
Well I went back to the truck and waited a few minutes and here he comes (with help) carrying a Anvil-Vice combination, its all one tool. It cost him $10 and its in great shape for its age, and he got it off the back of the wagon with the baby clothes. Toys were piled up in front of it so it couldn't be seen at a distance. I saw that thing and got sick to my stomach.
I'm happy for him but P/Oed at myself cause I was right there.
I'll stop by his house tomorrow and take some pics, your gonna love it.
Pardon me while I go cry :-).

I often say to myself (silently), "Now, don't be lazy.  That pile is why you're here."

I know how that is.  I have a terrible time forcing myself to even stop at sales that have kids clothes and toys, much less get out of the car and actually paw through the stuff.  You've given me new incentive to do so.

What a strange and unusual vise....

With a twist of irony...the only feature covered by the patent is the quick adjust jaw, which the inventor seems to have changed in production. This would probably have bit him in an infringement suit, assuming anyone else wanted to make such a strange looking vise...

Not assigned, so no clue who made it...
Edit:

Tho I don't know who cast it, A mention in foundry notes the meeting of the Moline foundrymans association, and lists Carl as a member of the Apprenticeship board. Assuming the foundrymen followed standard union practice, he had to be a Master to hold that position. So, chances are he worked at a Moline area foundry...
He has a half dozen other patents, including for for a method of casting....

Unfortunatly, in the 1920's, Moline was rife with foundries....

I think this design is neat enough that I bought one too, some years back.  Not real heavy jaws, but a unique amount of clearance around them.  A different thought going with the small amount of travel from the screw, then remove the pin slide the whole outer jaw.   Nice to see another one.

OK, I see that his is missing that pin. Didn't know it extended out that far.

I think I need therapy now :-)

Do you think the little chain will keep somebody from stealing the beast ?  (humor)

Remember, you can always borrow it and forget to bring it back for six months -P

I have the anvil half of one of those. I paid $15.00 a few years ago.
I have heard people call them a ships vise.

Ouch, I'd be crying too if I walked past that one. Very nice!
