Title: John Deere and Thorsen Ratchets - Repair?
Post by: Provincial on September 02, 2012, 04:26:22 AM
I have a John Deere 3/8" drive ratchet, marked TY3121 USA.  It has a 2-pawl mechanism inside and the mechanism is retained by a spiral spring.  One of the pawls has broken.

I also have a Thorsen 77JC ratchet "mfg. USA" that has guts that fit the John Deere, except that it is a 1-pawl ratchet.

Did the same maker produce both ratchets?  Is there a repair kit for the 2-pawl version?  Is a repair kit affordable?

Pictures would be most helpful. I know that some of the John Deere ratchets were made by Bonney.

Rebuild kits for both the John Deere/Bonney and Thorsens are NLA. Best option would be to keep an eye out for another ratchet of that type that's externally buggared but has good innards. Then do a parts swap.

If I had things to do over again, I'd snag every used ratchet I could and sort them out according to what I've discovered in the ratchet thread. Then, when I or someone needed a rebuild kit, I'd have those parts available. Hindsight is 20/20, you know.
