Its nice to have wife manning the wrench archives. At labor day auction I was thinking possible $30-$40 for the MH Z435 wrench,but a call to wife gave Rathbone price of $4 ( she only gave me the low price).
To make a short story long,I got the wrench,a screwdriver I like a lot, and a 1 1/2 wide Keen Kutter wood chisel for $6 (with buyers premium thats $6.60) Thank goodness I didn't spend $40 for that wrench but they don't let you keep bidding when every one else quits.

You did good!!! The screwdriver in particular. I found one at a FM in FL that I frequent, but had to spend $8.00 for it.
Turns out that a patent was actually issued to an L. V. Walkley of Plantsville, Conn. (anybody see whats coming?) on July 17, 1928. Pat. No. was 1,677,572. And, according to DATAMP the mfg. was none other than the H. D. Smith Co.

Sure! That S-in-a-circle is the H.D. Smith mark...
The next question is...has anybody seen one with a pat. no. on it?
My guess is these weren't real popular and that only one run was made, and it had the pat. applied for stamp.

I have two, and neither has a patent #. I think they were produced toward the end of H D Smith's existence. Last catalog seems to have been 1925, but they lasted a few years after that.
I have had another like this and tried to check for patent date but coudn't find the screwdriver. Did find the ones pictured but not the driver with the big S.
While trying to find storage for a recently acquired hatchet,I found the H D Smith screwdriver I was looking for this AM. It is 14 1/2 long versus the 11 1/2 I had previously shown. It reinforces Papa's theory that patent No may not have been used as neither of these have patent No.
Did uncover a neat Buffum Tool Co 4 oz ball pein that I had no idea I owned. Made my day. I like Buffum tools.
