Title: 18.5" monkey wrench is a Whitman & Barnes.
Post by: oldtools on September 28, 2012, 04:34:18 AM
Finally replaced the old burnted wood handles on my monkey wrench.
How it looked before
Marked wood & bandsaw cut outside of 1/8" line, then cut ~45 deg. from edge.
Used belt sander to rough sand to shape (still ~1/8" oversize)
Drilled 5/16" hole & 1/2" counter for bolt, ground hex round on nut & bolt, hacksaw shallow slot for screwdriver.
used burr grinder to cut hollows in wood to match handle protrusions.
trial fit nut & bolt, & filed handle to fit the tang & taper ends. assembled with epoxy glue.
beltsand excess wood & bolt/nut flush to handle.
handsand finish, used tongue oil 1st coat...

Good job!
Close enough for the pharts I run with! 8^) heh

And yeah, you can't post a restoration without divulging the wood choice??
It does look kinda Polynesian to me too.

My niece gave me ~100 planks of this used Hard wood floor, 18" to 40" long.
I have been using it to make custom wood signs & nameplates with my scrollsaw, also notched & fit wooden cross.
