Got some pictures up and although I don't have a model number for the beat up one, the one with no latch and the double chrome handles is a DG-21 and there seems to be no info out there about this box. The inside tray is a different color, so I'm not sure if it's factory or not. It sure fits in there perfectly. I have the Kennedy person researching this box to see what they can find out about it. This box is in nearly excellent condition. found it at a yard sale about a mile from our house. He wouldn't take any less than $10. Even the painted on cursive logo on the fore lid is unscathed.
The older beat up Kennedy has the name on the middle latch and the decal on the inside, but what is most certainly a home made tray for the insides. It was part of the cleanup from the Tag A Long Sale last Saturday. Amortized over everything else I hauled off there , I might have 75 cents tied up in it.
Any additional info is always appreciated. it's truly amazing how many times this forum knows more about companies' vintage products than they do......

Photos of the "beater". It's oldenough to have the rounded corner addons installed and the decal inside looks way older than the DG-21.

Looks like you got some nice boxes for a good deal. Those Kennedy's are well made and a classic style. My Dad had one like your first one pictured, don't know what happened to it.
I always liked the look of that brown krinkle paint. You did well, and if that tote is the wrong color, don't let the correct police give you any greif about it.
I can help a little, not much.
The last 2 digits of Kenendy's part number for the small boxes is just the width of the box in inches. The beginning identifies the style of box. So for example, style 3 is a rectangle type box with a flat lid, the 16 inch version is number 316....
The older boxes, before the 'Kennedy Kits' have only numeric styles, but the kits have letter prefixes, S is the kit version of the rectangle box, CS is the same box with a cantelever tray...
Unfortunatly, I don't know the prefix for any of the other ones, they had boxes for electricians, plumbers, welders etc....
The socket divider in the tray would lead me towards a mechanics toolbox or something related, but the trays are interchangable between some of the boxes...
The rounded corners on the beater make it a standard box, the 'kits' were cheaper boxes and did not have those. (They may have gone away on the standard boxes at some point tho, they are really an artifact of wood boxes)
Both boxes could plausably be from the 40's, The leather handles I think vanished in the 60's, ....

Just got the reply from the Kennedy folks and the DG-21 is shown in their 1972 catalog WITH a green tray, so that issue is solved. The catalog didn't list a price, as they were going 4 per carton at 52# to dealers. Nice to know some companies take care of their"ancestors" though...now to get info on the older one with the leather handle.....

Shannon from Kennedy Co. sent a photo of a catalog description of the older box too. It's old enough that they still called them "bags" back then. Shannon was thinking this was from the 30's, but not positive. It's a model 216 according to their dimensions. Man, $5 back then was a bunch of money for a tool"vessel". Shannon also said that the box came with the supports for a top tray, but one was not included for the $5, which explains the homemade one that's in there. I love resolutions......

You have to love Kennedy for their customer service.
They were absolutely great when I called to inquire about ordering a new handle and lock set for my Kennedy chest. Kennedy customer service was so good that I'll be a fan of theirs for life!!!!
