Title: Wissota wire wheel setup repaired
Post by: Wrenchmensch on February 14, 2013, 10:55:16 PM
I use a combination of a 7-inch soft steel wire wheel and a brass wheel for cleaning corrosion and other stuff off my steel and iron wrenches.  My brother-in-law lent me an old Wissota dual grinder setup which I converted with the wire wheels. The Wissotas came with cast aluminum wheel guards and end shrouds. Over time, I fractured the right hand wheel guards.  That wheel had also never had an end shroud. I got the Wissota on-line site, and it said they no longer make grinders, but they had parts. So I called and ordered the guard and the shroud I needed.  A fellow named Bill expedited the parts, and 4 days later I installed them.  Having the shroud for the brass wheel means the suction dust removal system now works on that end as well.  Bill, at Wissota, also suggested how to balance the wire wheels to reduce vibration (which I did do).

I used a 5 gallon Ridgid shop vac with lots of 2 1/2" flex tubing and fittings to set up my dust removal system.  I just put a HEPA filter in the Ridgid vacuum, replacing the lower grade dust filter I had originally installed.

"My brother-in-law lent me" - Man is he ever going to be happy to get it back now!

Wow that is a beauty of a grinder! And a generous brother in law!
Really lucky finding the parts and a great repair.

Changing your filter will help but only so much. For dry pickup make yourself an old fashioned dirtbag!
An old sweatshirt is ideal. Minimum sewing, and a strip of velcro, hot melt glued on.

Wrenchmensch,  How did he suggest you balance the wheels?  I have some vibration in mine.

Mike:

Bill advised me to loosen the wheels, adjust the wheels 10 degrees, tighten and test.  Keep doing this until vibration is noticeably lessened.  It worked for me after about 3 tries.
