them amber bakelite handles are beautiful when in good condition.

...which is almost never! I don't think they were very durable. :(

Bakelite and other early polymers have longevity issues. The science of polymer technology has come a long way. It took a long time for plastic to overcome the negative connotations that it has, but in another generation or two that will be gone as well.
