Title: Atlas Tool Co
Post by: jimwrench on May 20, 2013, 04:14:13 PM
I know this is a screwdriver made by( Atlas Tool Co New York) because it is stamped on this little fellow. I am having trouble finding any more info on company. Etsy and Rose each have one for sale but no additional info. Great Plains lists a box opener by Atlas Tool in a auction with a Mar 5 1909 patent. Was hoping patent drawing would give address etc. but was unable to find patent drawing. Anybody familiar with this manufacturer?

Try this  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlas_Press_%28tool_company%29  on wiki may this will shed some light on Atlas History. There are a lot of other links when you google for Atlas Tool Manufacturing  many are new companies and will not apply to your question --- check it out tho maybe I missed something. :)

That reference is to Michigan company. I'm looking for a New York company. Atlas is a common Tool co. name but most are too recent.

All I can find is a trademark registration reference, and it's thin...

"The Atlas Tool Mfg. Co., Inc., New York, N. Y. Filed May 10, 1929. ... Bent and Taper-End Bars, Telephone Digging Bars, Gooseneck Bars, Dumb-Waiter-Lock Bars, Bending Pins, Screw-Driver Bits, Bull Points, Box Chisels, Brick Chisels, Cape ..."

mark #283,773  (Seems to be 4 letters in a diamond)

Oddly, also, Obsolete American Securities lists:
"Atlas Manufacturing Co. Had office in New York. Dissolved 1886. "

Interestingly, I have one identical to yours.  I could find no information either.  I also have one that is very close in handle shape but with a longer shaft.  Both appear to have Rosewood handles.  The longer one has a knurled section on the shaft so that you could more easily turn it.  Nice little tools.

I'm beginning to think this company is a ghost. Can not even find an address let alone any company history. Have used googol and dogpile searchs as well as old popular mechanics and popular science but not one advertisement. Looked in all the  antique tool books I have.nothing Found screwdrivers, levels, squares and a hand grinder, for sale so they must have had a broad product line. Many Atlas Tool Co's but nothing in New York. Granted my search skills are amateur but even a far sighted sow sometimes finds an acorn. Any clues appreciated. This company is a burr under my saddle.

If this helps;

R.L. Polks & Co's 1915 directory for Trow NY copartnerships and corporations list a "Atlas Tool Co" with Franklin Bien Jr as President, Thos Adam as Secretary, and Chas Marks as Treasurer.  Capital of $5,000, and Franklin Bien Jr, Thos Adam, and Chas Marks as directors.  It lists an address of 356 B'way

Stanford University Library has a R.L. Polk & Co's 1918-1919 Trow New York Copartnership and Corporation Directory which list a "Atlas Tool Co" in NY as (inoperative) at 356 B'way

I have this 8" pipe wrench marked "Atlas Tool Co New York".

Papaw has an alligator wrench listed on his website for sale that is noted to be marked "Atlas Tool Co New York"

Rose Antiques notes an "Atlas Tool Co New York Divider"
http://www.roseantiquetools.com/store/product4000.html

and there is this "caliper" listed on Ebay at present with the same markings.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Calipers-Vintage-Atlas-Tool-Co-New-York-City-5-1-4-Inch-Span-/200901842109?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2ec6aed4bd

There is a "ATLAS TOOL & DIE" listed in Rochester NY - but it is noted to have a founding date of 1981

I'm not too sure I still have that one. Most of those are in totes out in the shop.

Guy's, I think you want Troy, NY, which is a little North and East of Albany.

And, in the "for what it's worth" department, there is a 356 Broadway in Troy...still.
