Title: Ridgid Pipe Wrenches
Post by: OilyRascal on September 02, 2013, 12:31:54 PM
I have been in acquire mode for a while now with Ridgid pipe wrenches.  I was organizing the shop a little today, and had a chance at a group photo of the current inventory.  The largest is a 48" down to the smallest of a 6".  I am apparently missing a 12" in the group.

I have tried to focus on the older style.  A few of them I've already had my go at refurbishing.

Nice! I see oldies in there...

Maybe some individual shots of the older ones?

Your missing the duckbill wrenches. I had to steal my 12" back from an old friend who borrowed it and then claimed ridged never made a 12" pipe wrench. I never did tell him I took it back because like he said, "they never made 12 inchers". Believe I'm only missing the 2 big uns.

Howdy Neil.  I've found Grandpas wrenches are the best kind.  Never seen a Ridgid 32" pipe wrench.  You may have meant 36", but if you didn't I would enjoy seeing pictures of a 32".

I just ran to the garage to double check. Its 36" your correct. For some odd reason I incorrectly said 32". I guess I have to many tools to keep track of, wait that's impossible.

OIly:  I'm not a hug collector of Rigid, so if I have a few 12'ers, ou can have all but one of them.  I'll take a look after the first of October and then get back to ya.

DM&FS

I have a few offset head models that can't be too common and a strap wrench you don't see evvery day.  My largest is a 36" aluminum handle I found for $10 at the WLGS a couple years ago.  Used it twice......and worth every penny!!

Howdy Dimwitted.  I hope you enjoyed the Birthday!  I also dug up a few Proto pipe wrenches in my dig the other day.  One being a 24".  I will gladly route them to your box as well.

Big aluminum pipe wrenches tend to go missing for me.  I have had 3 just disappear off the truck in the last couple years.

Cool, but the aluminum ones don
t weigh what the steel ones do and the thieves can run faste that way..  I scored a Giller socket and some other goodies for you...see the Wrench forum post.

I have not, and you'd think I would had given my background.

I believe the following are the oldest of the group.  Keep me honest please.

E10 Offset - marked "PAT PEND'G" - it is not aluminum; rather stripped of its paint when I got it.  I suspect this may be the oldest of the group.

E18 Offset - marked patent 1727623 (William O. Thewes Pat. Sept. 10, 1929) - This is one that I cleaned up and painted (yes, I use it therefore the scratches in the paint).

I had neglected to include my most unique of the Ridgid pipe wrenches.  It was a 6".  I suppose you could now call it an 8" as that's what it measures.  It came from my Grandfather's business.  I suspect it was one of his boys, not him, that did this........but nobody in the family cares to admit.

Cool.

Yes, the E10 offset is the oldest, followed by the 24".

When looking at the original group photo, I thought the little 6" might be older, but I see now it's just in really poor shape!

The University of Waterloo's Engineering Society has a 60" Ridgid pipe wrench as their mascot.  It was donated by the Ridge Tool Company in 1968 (and was valued at $350 in 1968).  They could not afford it so it was donated with two conditions: 1) it remain original Ridgid colors, and 2) it be named "The Ridgid Tool".  Both conditions were broken (it has been chromed 7 times to date, and renamed "The Tool").  There are some interesting reads regarding a prank where it was stolen and later returned incased in a drum of concrete.  It was found to have "U of T" engraved after it was removed from the concrete.  All of this chalked up to some college kid's prank.

Attached is a picture of the wrench (dated 1986).

It appears you're correct with the E10.  It's design pre-dates patent 1,727,623 and is more appropriately mapped to the design features outlined in patent 1,552,091 (granted Sep. 01, 1925).  DATAMP shows a 14" example.  A difference I can find between the DATAMP example and this one is the inclusion of "U.S.A" on the shank of the E10.

The earliest Ridgid pipe wrenches had a black finish. I think they changed to red around 1947-1948.

That's what we've always as duckbill pipe wrenches. Have no idea where that term came from or maybe its a local thing. The largest I've seen is 24".

Imagine my heart pumping faster today as I arrived home and find a package from TT member Bus.  I knew it had to be good coming from him.  I just had no idea how good.  A Ridgid E6, and several Thorsen sockets, were inside.  This is not your ordinary, everyday, run of the mill, E6.  Thank you, Bus!  You made my day.

Here she is:
