Indeed, its even better since they phased out the food tax. Those couple extra jingles in my pocket makes me feel better :-).

Those Sargent pliers are keepers! The wire cutters will cut anything you can throw at them. The parallel jaws are real handy too. I've had mine at least 45 years and still use them.

Elrich's patent *, so likely made by Pexto, interesting to see it for Sargent...

"Discretionary wrench tax" ;P

Looks like Jan. 14, 98 to me but Datamp says that was a Friday so I guess it is 96.
-
It definitely says 98. This wouldn't be the first tool with an incorrect patent date.

Yes 1896 is correct. Just brushed off this one that has (solid bar) above patent date and no apparent makers mark. Assuming it was made by assignee Pexto but haven't seen Sargent as maker.

Since KEEN KUTTER & other house brand monkey wrenches were made with the 1896 PS&W "Solid Bar" patent date, it's not unlikely that Sargent had some made to sell under their brand as well.

The Bernard patent parallel pliers are something I would never want to be without! Whether they say Bernard Scholhorn or Sargent they are all good. Any kind of work with any kind of wire, they just can't be beat!
They came in 4, 6 and 8" size. All of them have their uses! 6" is usually the hardest size to get.
I once had the chance, and snagged 6 of the little 4's, NOS in their original boxes.
I am down to the last one. I have given all the rest away to very happy owners.
