Electric motor with attachment.
« on: July 01, 2014, 07:59:27 AM »
Not sure if anyone can help with this.

I recently acquired a Dayton electric motor with an attachment made by Edgehammer Corporation. Just trying to find out it's function.

I was going to attach the motor to a table and use it for buffing. Still have to figure out how to attach it on it's side though...

Any ideas on both mysteries?

It looks like part of a belt sander. The name suggests flooring edge sander.

Harris,IL, and probably something to do with  printing or the commercial arts....1980's....

Easiest cheap way to mount an electric motor with no foot is large U clamps, upsidedown, into a plate.

Places that sell springs for large trucks have them up to a foot wide, but they are rather heavier than necessary, they also use them to mount signs to poles..
(Don't be stealing them from the city now ;P)

Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

Thanks guys.

I thought about the belt sander function as well, but the metal is enclosed and it'd be a tough time removing the end of that attachment just to get a belt inside there every time you had to replace it.

It must have driven some kind of belt with that smoothed over round steel piece; and definitely related to woodworking as it has sawdust all over it and was taken out of foreclosed cabinet making shop.

Anyone other ideas?

Poking around a little, I found this site: http://yabe.chudov.com/Edgehammer-Side-Hammer-Trim-Applier/ebayhist.html . The fellow there has apparently archived all of his ebay auctions (why?), and one of them was for an unused Edgehammer Trim Applier, Model DG2. It appears to be the same as yours, but has a proprietary marked motor housing (maybe the Dayton motor was a replacement). That said, he doesn't know how it was meant to be used either. Pricy little rascal though, he had the original box with a UPS sticker showing a COD amount of $815.45.

Did you try running it to see how & if it works?  does it vibrate to hammer trim?

Sell yours.  Buy a couple of really nice polishing lathes. Or a nice big polisher / grinder unit.

Whrn I bought mine a couple of years I thouht I did fine at over $400.00.

Good detective work there....

I wish I could sell it, but I'm guessing since nobody knows what it is and I can't find anything similar, there isn't a market/buyer for this kinda thing.

When I turn it on, it just spins, no hammer or vibrating action.

The circular steel piece is however a triangular shape, not a perfect circle I noticed. So it might have some kind of hammering action if the steel circle were pushed against wood trim of some sort.

I wonder if it hammers in some kind of t-molding. The kind that was on the edge of particle board folding tables.
