Newbie needs help dateing old tools
« on: July 17, 2014, 10:21:49 PM »
I never thought of myself as a tool collector, but as I walked around my shop and picked up tools that looked old and interesting, I ended with tools from 44 different makers or product lines that I would like to try to get an approximate date of manufacture. Some are well over 100-maybe?

I would like any advise from you "pro's" as to how I might date this collection in the few years I have left.

Thanks,  Dan

Can you post some nice, clear photos of your collection, Dan?

The website ALLOY ARTIFACTS is a good site for tool info.

Thanks, this site has worked well - found 7 photos that matched my tools exactly - even had dates!  Another 6 were very close and I was able to get an approximate date from other sources. Other tools have been hard to get information on - things like chisels or clamps.

I also expect problems dating misc. items marked Stanley or Starrett or items with old patents that are still offered for sale as new.

To start- the top and longest in this photo is marked Charles Buck - nothing more. The next three, two chisels and a scraper are only marked with the PEXTO oval logo. Any advise on how to get dates of mfg. would be much appreciated.

Twilight:
Candy is dandy, liquor is quicker!

bunger found the 3 PEXTO's in a 1927 catalog. Goodonya bunger!!!

Charles Buck left Buck Bros. in 1872 and started his own company that was reunited with Buck bros. in 1915, 10 years after his death. That would put the Mfg. date between 1872 and 1915. That is the best info I have been able to find.
