Socket use?

I got this with some other stuff at an auction today but do not know what it is. Please look at pics. The black arrow shows a knob that rotates and moves the 3 parts that have the red arrows.  I thought at first it was a stud extractor but the pieces make a triangle, don't think it would work well on a tight stud. Any idea? Thanks, Tman

Pawpaw, Are you referring to drill bits? I don't think so but not sure. I should have mentioned it is a 3/8" socket. Tman

It is an adjustable socket. Adjust the jaws to fit the hex nut or bolt and use it as any other socket on a hex nut or bolt. I think Crescent Tools made one in maybe the 80's or 90's.

Correction, it was Channelock that made the adjustable socket. I have one, 3/8 drive.

Yes , I have the Channelock also. Never could find a use for it. If was two or 4 jaw I could use it.

Irwin Hanson makes 2 sizes of an adjustable tap socket that has 2 jaws and each jaw has a notch in the center. They don't open very far just big enough for 1/2 taps on the larger on and I think 1/4 or 5/16 taps on the smaller one.

They have a little different version today, but similar concept. It is called gator grip, an sold at big box hardware stores.

I got one as a gift. It broke so it went in with some scrap metal.
