Was this stuff prior owners put there, or did they follow you home and get lost in the barn?

For a twisted monkey that is a tiny one, compared to the utility handles,  good find.

Well the barn is timber framed construction, is has been the workshop since the 1930's or before. We started cleaning a repairing it back in the 1980's some stuff has not been touched yet. So it has been in there for many years in box, trays, cans. In other words it's still a mess!

Those are my favorite utility knives. I have three Defiance and just acquired a Stanley 1299 in that ugly tool box I bought recently.  I use all of them.  Apparently there's a relationship between Stanley and Defiance?

Defiance was the budget Stanley line for years: http://www.farmcollector.com/tools/stanley-tool-co-defiance-zm0z12augzbea.  At some point, they moved to "Handyman" as a brand.  I think it replaced "Defiance" as the brand name in the 50s, but not sure.

Northwoods

I find those old knives really interesting. Probably have 50 non-retractables. The best ones are steel,, not pot metal, and have the holes in the handles.
Best one is a no name japanned with 16 holes on one side; 17 in the other.
The ORIGINAL Northwoods.
