Arkansas Pawn and Estate Sale Finds
« on: October 30, 2011, 05:53:18 PM »
Been off the grid for a while getting ready for the trip to Arkansas for a former company's employee's reunion, but I did remember to bring some cash for yard sales and pawn shops.  Two Saturdays ago I hit one in N. Little rock and was absolutely floored by the wrench and socket stash he had.  Bought 13 items and left $20 poorer, but that haul included     ,       , and a        ratchet,so I didn't feel too bad. It averaged out to $1.30 a piece.  He had an immaculate set of Proto sockets(1/2" drive) that I should've gone back for on Monday. On Sunday morning, I hit 3 or 4 Estate sales(guess the Bible Belt moved further south, as I don't remember yard sales and estate sales happening before church let out when I lived down there) at 8AM.  Spent like $5 at one and $8 at another. Nothing major at these, but then I went to a competing Pawn down the road from the Saturday guy and spent 30 minutes rummaging and had maybe 7 items and he wanted $20 for the handful and i just put them o nthe table and said thanks, but no thanks.  He didn't even try to haggle.  Some Pawnies are hungrier than others I guess.

As I was heading home I passed through Fayetteville and cruised up through Rogers and found a pawn shop in a nice new metal building and went inside.  The guy was friendly and I milled through his tool stash and found some interesting wrenches and a cool old Keen Kutter jigsaw for $10  He had a price of $9 on the saw by itself, so he was very flexible.  Big haul there was a 4" SK 1/4"drive  mini ratchet and a German combination wrench called a Belzer.  He had several other Belzers there, but they had $4-8 price tags on them each and since I wasn't familiar with the brand, I took one at .50 and got out of there.

Another interesting find at one of the houses was the Wooden handled Craftsman spiral screw driver that looked virtually new.  It said it was made in Germany too.  Go figure.

I'll write up yesterday's auction a bit later down the road.  Got home okay.

Belzer became Belzer-dowidat became BAHCO-Belzer....
The company goes back to 1884....

They also make refrigeration tools, really kewl screwdrivers etc etc...

They are respectable german tools, they would have been worth the .5 ea ; )

Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

For those of you that really scrutinize these photos, I obviously forgot the Proto 3034 DOE that's below the straight edge, and the 18 oz. Plumb hammer with the glass shaft over to the right.  I'll never brag about my inventory skills ever again....

I( have some Dowidat stuff somewhere too, but not much.  GJ had a few posts about the 1952 series tools also.  One is enough for now....still find it odd that German companies were making SAE wrenches way back when....

I was in Fayetteville in March and went to every pawn shop that was open and found almost NOTHING. They had a handful of extremely rusted wrenches, nothing good.

Sweet! That little SK is going to be a favorite, I'll bet!
Falstaff was the first beer I ever tasted. My old man drank it.
Wheres the utility knife? You know I can't resist those!
How small is the smallest combination wrench?

I can't believe you bought slip joint pliers and 6" diagonal cutters.
What, are you as bad as me?? heehehehe
How many does that make now??
If you are 1/2 as bad as me, you already have cutters in every toolbox and the kitchen tool drawer and garden shed and still you buy another pair when it comes around heeheheheh

The Stanley 59 dowel jig was so versatile, accurate and successful, hardly anyone else even tried to put up any competition for about 75 years. I have tried other dowel jigs, but nothing else comes close.
I can't see yours exactly clear enough, but it seems to be a middle type.  I have had a number of them and there are definitely enough different models to do a type study.
I just wish people wouldn't always lose the bushings!  I have a set and a few more, but I would like to have a couple sets.

You never know when you might HAVE to use these.  You gotta have one handy in every room in the house, with duplicates in case you forget where you put one.  How many do you need?  Why, just one more...

Yeah, the pliers and side cutters were like  a quarter each.  That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.....
