Lathe Undercutter

Hello, I picked this up today. I tried to find some info on it, but no luck. It has in raised lettering on the casting  K R W GENERATOR COMMUTATOR LATHE UNDERCUTTER MODEL -A-  . Any info on this would help, company of manufacture? usage? approx. time frame of production? Thanks, Lou

Looks like it does the same job as the commutator mica cutter I bought without knowing what it was several years ago. It was one of Tool Talk's early "What's-Its".
I'll try to dig up some pictures.
Lynn Dowd has one, and I have three of them now.
That "order cutter by gage" means you could order the cutter blades in three different gages.

 after turning down the armature,  you have to clean/recut  the grooves by sliding the lever  back and forth with the  cutter blade in the groove.

I have a commutator lathe, manually operated type. 

You mount the lathe in a vise, mount the commutator in the lathe (it would have different collets for different size shafts.) Then start cranking.

I'll dig it up and get pics.  It is used in the first operation, then you need to cut the mica down.

Now-a days you just replace the tool/motor.  Brushless motors, advanced electronics, inexpensive manufacturing.  Everything's changed.

I like fixing / repairing/ re-purposing.  I like it when others do it too. It's part of the Boy Scout's Law to be Thrifty.
