Hello, I am still digging through the machinist box. From what I have learned, the former owner was either a pattern maker, or worked in the pattern maker shop at Crouse Hinds. These are a mystery, aluminum & brass, and the rods look like they would have been used as a setting tool. Most are about 5/16" in diameter, and about 5/16" high, each with 6 hairline slots on the flat area. There are quite a few different sizes in the brass.  He could have been saving these for scrap, but there is no weight here, he would have had to collect 1000's!! Thanks, Lou

Lou, those are called core box vents. Here is a link: http://smelko.com/?page_id=469

They allow the air to vent out of a mold when the molten metal is poured in, or injected. The slits are tiny, so air can escape, but the metal does not flow through. Hope that helps
My friends call me Bob. My wife calls me a lot worse.
