Enamel tank

Not a tool, but thought maybe someone might know what this is.  Has a hanger handle.  Also has a fine mesh screen top and bottom with what appears to be sand between. Must be for staining something. Can not access the sand or grit to replace or clean.

After searching a bit on the web, I think you have a gravity water filter.  It probably had a lid and a water tap in that hole at the bottom.  Try a rubber mallet and see if the upper part will dislodge and reveal the sand inside.  At that point it may be able to be cleaned and refilled/reused.  Some of them had small table stands that enabled the tap to be accessed with a cup or glass.  Cool item.

Sand water filter, yessir.  Sister just bought a modern stainless unit, sits on the counter, she chills a pitcher of water, after running it thru the filter, greatly improved the taste of water at her place.
