Think about this.    A Carpenter back in the good old days would spend a weeks wages for a good quality panel saw,  and more than that for a good set of chisels.   One reason you find old carpenter chests with LOCKS and names on the tools. ;-)

Very true.  But there's another part of the equation.   Me and the tools have spent time, a lot of time, working together.  I don't want a replacement hammer.  I want the hammer that once was used by my grandfather, the one I've been using since I was 7 years old.   Tools are *very* personal, and not simply interchangeable.
I too have my Grandfathers claw hammer that I also used at about age 7.   I'm now 64.   That's  57 years of friendship with a piece of steel and wood.   Life is good.

I grabbed a lawn mower sitting next to the dumpster bin at a local pawn shop. Re-soldered one loose wire and the thing started! A little welding, cleaning, and paint, and it's still going after 3 years.
Main bearing does leak a little. But checking/adding oil when I use it is alot cheaper than paying to get that bearing fixed!

64?  That's me, too.  57 years...  Who says we can't maintain a relationship!  'Course, I have played around with other hammers....
