web site for anvil makers marks?

I don't have any books on anvils.

Are there web sites  that can tell me what the makers marks are?

Like an alloy artifacts for blacksmiths?

The only decent online reference of any type I know of is anvilfire's anvil gallery...

I believe there is a book, Anvils in America.  Great reference but may be tough to find.  As far as marks, most of the good makers put their name on the side,  Hay Budden, Peter Wright, Fisher, and a good half dozen others.  How heavy is this anvil you are after?

Anvils in America is a great book. I've had a copy for years. You can readily get one for about $65 (I think)....not a cheap book! I wont be near my copy for a few days, but I'll gladly take a look for you then if you haven't figured it out yet.

A with an arrow?  I KNOW!!!  It's an ACME, guy out in arizona used to order them out of a catalog.   Wil E. Cyote or something like that.     It's late, I'm tired,

    That looks like it says "Mouse Hole Forge" on the side.  If you google that you will find info on it.  They were made in England.

Very good anvils as I remember.

"M&H Armitage Mouse Hole Forge" dates it to 1854-1875 from what I have. 1-1-0 makes it 140lbs

Mouse Hole's are great. I have a rough one from the 1700s a big bigger than that and a really nice one a bit smaller. Is this an anvil you already got?

no... not yet....

Most of the Anvils I find are family heirlooms, passed down from generations ago.

when I go pickin' it's often an ice breaker to tell the owner about his special toy.

I buy some other stuff and , a few visits later, they sometimes admit that they never use

the old thing and it's kinda in the way......

besides I get to learn about anvils without having to pick them up....


I have the anvil book on order, and found the ABANA site so I am starting to climb the learning curve
