The lowest setting marked on our old barometer had been 28.53 for the so-called Perfect Storm of March, 1993. Today as Hurricane Sandy roared ashore, our barometer descended rapidly over several hours to 28.30 inches at 21:30 DST here on the East Coast.  The barometer is an old English one  and uses unusual phrases.  At today's low point, the barometer dial is inscribed with the appropriate legend "Much Rain".

The barometric pressure had started back up by the time the photo was taken (just after 22:00).

We came through the night OK.  The standby generator went on about 1:30 A.M. and stayed on until 10:00 A.M. today. The generator powers lights, water, heat, hot water, A/C, and computer (depending on fair weather friends at XFINITY).

From what I could see on the weather map, Bird won't get plowed out until Thanksgiving.
