What to do with Stanley 46 fence? Advice wanted
« on: January 17, 2013, 01:09:32 PM »
I picked up a pretty nice Stanley 46 fence at an estate sale.

I do not know the variations, but believe, just on sight, that this is a type 10 or later. Definitely not an early fence.

This fence has both thumb screws, the slitter and slitter screw, and another set screw, all in nice condition.

I am wanting to sell this fence on ebay. Should I part it out, listing the slitter and screw, two thumb screws, the other set screw, and then the fence, or should I list it all as one lot??

Thinking about running an auction. What should I start the bid at?

Anyone have an idea of the value of the fence?

Would the thumb screws be correct for a 55 or 45 of the same era?

Thank you for your help!!!! I really do appreciate it!!!!

Need pictures.  Do you mean the fence?  As far as I know, the slitter attaches to the body, not the fence.

I don't know how to upload a picture here...and we've had trouble getting the Photobucket app to work on our phones.

This is not the body. It does not have/ had a handle.

This fence definitely has a slitter.

Here is a link that has a picture of a fence like I have:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/STANLEY-No-46-Skewed-Plow-Plane-Mint-Complete-In-Box-Type-10-ca-1905-09-/400345042469?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d366c8e25

If you look closely, you can see the slitter in what I am calling a fence.

Is my terminology correct?

My goodness, I have so much to learn....

The slitter is below the box -- the piece on the left.  The fence is the piece at the top with the wood on it.

The slitter is the piece with the v shaped end just in front of the left hand corner of the box in the photo you reference. The fence is the piece with the wood face.

Thank you for your help!!!!

I don't have the fence with wood on it, or a body. I have the piece that has "Stanley No. 46" cast into it. This is the piece with the arch.

What is that part called?

It does have a very small adjustable cutter held in place with a set screw. What is that called?

I may also have a fence (with wood) too. I bought a large lot that day, and looked everywhere for the rest of the 46 and the cutters. I also pulled a rougher 45, and a handful of better items, but couldn't find the 46 anywhere. I wondered what the fence with wood fit.

I tell you guys, life is hard for folks as dumb as I am, LOL!!!!

It is in fact, part of the plane, it doesn't seem to have a name, Patrick just calls it 'the sliding section'

If it has a guard plate, you have something worth more than the plane....

(detachable, mostly rectangular flat piece screwed to the side of it)

One of Stanley's prettier tools ....
Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

Thank you Rusty.

So when I list this on ebay, it should say "sliding section"?

In the 55 manual I have, the other part I was asking about is labeled as a spur.

Thank you for being patient while I am trying to learn.

If you have an electronic copy of a picture of what you've got, you can click on "Attachments and other options" that's just below the box you write in.
You'll get "Attach:" that has a browse button.  Click on the browse button, find the image, and click "open."  This will put your image in your post.
Until we have pictures, it's hard to say what we are talking about with any precision.
