Possibly the original German spelling had an "umlaut" over the "a" which was anglicized as "ae" -- a few of the Kraeuter design patents are in DATAMP. -- D46,681 ( http://www.datamp.org/patents/advance.php?pn=D46681&id=28547&set=4 ); D46,682 ( http://www.datamp.org/patents/advance.php?pn=D46682&id=28548&set=5 ) and D59,602 ( http://www.datamp.org/patents/advance.php?pn=D59602&id=42453&set=6 ).
