What was it used for

I posted this long ago, and no definite ideas came forth.   It is about 15 inches long, cast iron.   Looks like it was screwed to a wall, with the handle hanging down.  For compressing, a spring?   With something tightened through the keyhole slot?   Something about the size of an apple.  So, what is it?

It doesn't look like it would crush them flat.  With most can crushers you wind up with a thin aluminum disc.  I think it was for something else...unfortunately I don't know what.

Maybe for old style tire tube patching, possibly missing the piece that pressed flat against the small flat circle on the base??

The slot looks like it would take wing nut - maybe it passes through and is turned 90o to lock a (missing) piece in place..

It is a bench clamp that holds a carpenter's saw for sharpening and setting the teeth.
I run across them in old homesteads with a barn or outside workshops.

It looks very similar to a leatherworking press I saw. If so there would be a interchangeable top die, to press in patterns.

Looks like a coil spring compressor of some kind. Like a valve spring compressor, you could compress the coil and the slot on the top would allow the shaft to fit through.

15" long, but what diameter is the hole? what is the travel height? kind of looks like a ~3"dia. X ~10" high Spring could fit?
hole looks oblong allowance for travel arc of handle, how deep is the top retainer?  maybe a side view with ruler could help.
