It still remains an amazing operation when you consider the volume delivered by a large group of semi literate people.

Ouch, that's a nasty generalization there. Did your mailman bite your dog?
The various 'literacy studies'  over the years have shown the literacy of the entire U.S. adult population to be a national embarrassment. Just curious why you single out the mail carriers.

It's a line I remember because I first heard it from the postmaster in the next town over from where I live!

Around here mail carriers tend to pick dogs up and ride them in the truck till they get the dog home or the postmaster comes out to take the dog home because the dog lives on a different route.  They don't even bring the dog home postage due.
