Drills? Reamers?
« on: March 22, 2016, 05:55:17 PM »
Hello, Thanks for all the input on the Antique store find. I found these while digging through yet another box. Both are stamped HS NY, the one at top is stamped 1-3/16, and the one at bottom is stamped 1-1/4. Both are 6" long, The main body thickness is 3/8", and both measure approx. 9/16" thick across the ribs. Both measure 1-3/8" at the upper end ( opposite the point), which I am guessing is the shank. Both have 2 raised/sharpened edges. Drills?  Reamers? For metal? Stone? Thanks, Lou

The ends are certainly sharpened as if to drill a hole, but how would a person chuck on the other end? I've never seen anything like them before. Hopefully someone can enlighten us.

Hello, Plyerman. I am guessing these are from a Magnetic Drill Press, or a machine mounted Drill? Railroad? , or Bridge Builders?

Ah-hah, got it! Do a google search for Railroad Track Drill Bits. They come in several sizes, in both single-end and double-end configuration. For drilling the bolt holes for bolster plates and such.

I still wonder how the "chuck" works on whatever holds onto those things..? I didn't find any photos of the drill bits mounted up in their drilling machine.

Hello, Plyerman. I went to the Racine website, too. I even tried the parts breakdown to get a look at a chuck, or, bit holder, no luck, cool looking gas powered drill!!!!!!!!  Thanks again, Lou
