Neat. So what does the pin sticking out the far edge do? Pull it out to adjust the angle of the jaws?

You guessed correct. There is a set of notches and a lock tab that engages in the notch to set the angle of the jaws in relation to the handle. There were 2 different styles of levers made. This is what I believe is the later style.

Both style of levers and latches shown. The wrench on the Left is what I believe is the older design and has a section broken out that should lock the head in place.

there must be a crate of 12" Ellis wrenches waiting to be discovered somewhere.
