Dial Indicator Stand? Watchmaker's Tool?
« on: June 07, 2016, 05:29:25 PM »
Hello, I am not sure what this is used for. Looks like a dial indicator or surface gage stand. No mfg.'s markings, I am guessing this was shop made. The post is a beefy 5/8" diameter, the base measures 1-1/4 x 2-1/4 x 3", and the overall height is 11-3/4". The threaded piece with the knurled nut aligns with a hole in the piece at the bottom, the hole at bottom is not threaded. Possibly a watch maker, or watch repair tool? Thanks, Lou

Hi Lou,
That looks to be a go/no-go type inspection fixture with a fine adjustment screw. The little base insert is likely hardened.
Some might set them up in pairs, one as a GO and the other as a NO-GO to verify the length (or height) of finished parts.
Using a single one, you would set it for the max allowable and reject all parts that are too long and will not pass through.
Then set it for the min allowable, run all of the non rejected parts and reject all that pass through as being too short.
Much like a "Snap Gauge", but with only one anvil instead of 2.
Just a guess.
Cheers.

I agree with your thinking on the shop made, I think they were making a go-nogo height gauge, a job specific tool.
The center upright looks like it is from a dial indicator set.

I'm just slow Wallhopper you beat me by a minute 45 seconds.
