Bog No. 643 Clutch Grip Ratchet Handle
« on: February 28, 2019, 03:43:59 PM »
Any of you guys ever dared open the head on one of Bog's double-head ratchets?
I got one today in a tub of stuff (including a nice set of early (but not Indian Head) 1/2" Blackhawk six point sockets, four four-point sockets in 3/8, 1/2, 9/16, and 5/8. and two of their old extensions.  One has the pressed tin revolving grip.
There were a couple of old Snap-on sockets, one a S/O strikeover
The Bog rat was running rough, and so I dove head-first into it.  Let me tell you, it is not for the faint of heart.
No gears.  No teeth.  Just little pins, little springs, and roller bearings.
My best advice is to use grease to hold those little bitty springs in place while you get the rollers in place.  You are sure to have great success on about the 19th attempt.
I love to annoy Mrs. Northwoods by making her listen to that satisfying clicking sound of a newly-refurbished ratchet.  She thought surely I was disappointed when I made her listen to the Bog.  No sound at all.
I guess I am a little excited to be getting anything at all, considering the cold weather here in the great North Woods.

Sorry, no pix.  But I am looking through my boxes for a speed wrench and male ratchet.  They are in the garage or in the "I need to sell this stuff" pile or the sitting on the shop floor pile or the "those boxes on the shelves" pile.  I'll find them for sure.  Maybe not someday soon.  But someday.

I admire your courage.  In your place, I'd have just soaked the head in a can of mineral spirits for a few days, running it back and forth now and again, then soaked it in oil for a few days.

I've assumed it was essentially a pin-and-ramp construction, like the freewheel on a Briggs and Stratton pull rope starter, or a bicycle freewheel.

I've got my grandfather's Bog ratchet.  It's enjoying its retirement - I tend to use a Snap-On ratchet in the 1/2" size.

I tried the solvent and oil and the back and forth.  Not for a few days, but for a few hours.  I am sometimes too short on patience.

But it works now, good as ever, And in my expedition through my horde, I found:
the Blackhawk spinner with two rotating pressed steel grips No. 500
a pressed steel female rat with drive plug No. 911X
a sliding Tee No. T 4
a 10" ell No. T 5
a fixed-end breaker bar No. 110 X
a 10" extension No. T 10
a 6" extension with pressed steel rotating grip No. T 60
a spark plug socket No. 130 in 15/16"

Looks like I have some amalgamation of a 18-A, a C-22 and C-32 set, possibly with some extras.  Need to find the Tee spinner and the crank handle, as well as the larger spark plug wrench.

I also came across a much smaller Bog rat, this one a No. 203 in 3/8"  It's what I would call elegant.  Only 6" long  PAT. 1,888,885 OTHERS PEND.    Like this one:    https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-bog-tools-8-drive-compact-1819737468

I forgot to look up the patent on the little Bog No. 203.
Pat 1,888,885 is for an economical method of manufacturing the ratchet body.  The head is made separately and the handle is attached to it.
Notice in the photo that there is a demarcation line between the head and handle on the top photo.  They are separate parts.
Note, as well, that the inner workings of this rat seem to be made for light work, only.
